White crystalline powder or granular solid with a strong chlorine gas irritant odor, containing over 90% available chlorine, with a solubility of 1.2% in water. It readily decomposes upon contact with acids or alkalis. This compound is an extremely potent oxidizing agent and chlorinating agent.
